Another symptom of sleep apnea is waking up feeling tired or groggy even after getting a full night's rest. This happens because individuals with sleep apnea tend to wake up multiple times throughout the night due to interrupted breathing patterns. Additionally, some people experience morning headaches as a result of reduced oxygen levels during the night. Other possible symptoms include difficulty concentrating during the day, irritability, mood swings, and decreased sex drive. 

It's important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by other factors besides sleep apnea. Therefore it's essential to consult with your doctor if you're experiencing any of these issues regularly so they may evaluate you for proper diagnosis and treatment options. 

Treating Sleep Apnea 

Treating sleep apnea depends on the severity of the condition. Mild cases may only require lifestyle changes, while more severe cases may need medical intervention, such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. 

  • Lifestyle changes include avoiding alcohol and sedatives before bed, losing weight if overweight or obese, and sleeping on your side instead of your back. These simple changes can help reduce symptoms in some people with mild sleep apnea. 
  • CPAP therapy involves wearing a mask over your nose and/or mouth at night that delivers constant air pressure to keep your airways open while you sleep. This is often effective for moderate to severe sleep apnea but may take some time to get used to. 
  • Oral appliances that hold the jaw forward during sleep can also be helpful for treating certain types of obstructive sleep apnea. 
  • Surgery is usually reserved for severe cases where other treatments have failed or are not an option. Surgical options include removing excess tissue from the throat or correcting structural abnormalities in the nose or throat.
